Terms & Conditions
Last updated: April 2025
1. Nature of the Program
Yusr is a community-based mutual aid program, not a licensed insurance provider. Participation is voluntary. Membership does not constitute an insurance policy and is not regulated under provincial insurance legislation. Coverage under Yusr is conditional on meeting all eligibility requirements as described herein.
2. Eligibility
To be eligible for coverage, a member must: (a) have submitted a complete and truthful application; (b) have been approved by Yusr; (c) have completed the 90-day waiting period following approval; (d) be in good standing — meaning all prior community contributions have been paid in full; and (e) the community must have reached the required membership threshold at the time of the qualifying event.
3. Registration Fee
A one-time, non-refundable registration fee is charged upon approval: $50 for Single, $100 for Couple, and $150 for Family memberships. This fee does not constitute a contribution to a reserve fund and is not held in trust.
4. Community Contributions
When an eligible member passes away, Yusr will initiate a contribution from all eligible good-standing members. Contributions are calculated proportionally using weighted units: Single = 1 unit, Couple = 1.5 units, Family = 2 units. Contributions are capped per event at $40 (Single), $60 (Couple), or $80 (Family). Members will be notified of each contribution event. Yusr charges a 14% service fee on the total funeral cost, which is included in the distribution.
5. Coverage Limit
Yusr's maximum coverage is $12,000 CAD per qualifying event, paid directly to the licensed funeral home. Any funeral costs exceeding $12,000 CAD remain the responsibility of the member's family. Yusr does not provide coverage for costs unrelated to funeral and burial services.
6. Payment Authorization
By joining Yusr, members authorize Yusr to charge their saved payment method for community contributions as described above. Members will receive advance notice of each charge. Members who dispute a valid contribution charge or fail to maintain a valid payment method may have their membership suspended.
7. Member Obligations
Members must: (a) provide accurate and complete information on their application; (b) maintain a valid payment method on file; (c) notify Yusr of any material changes to their household status; and (d) pay all valid contribution charges in full within the specified timeframe.
8. Suspension and Termination
Yusr reserves the right to suspend or terminate a membership at any time if a member provides false information, fails to pay contributions, or engages in conduct detrimental to the community. Suspended or terminated members are not eligible for coverage.
9. Threshold Condition
Coverage for all members is conditional on the community maintaining a minimum number of eligible members (the "threshold") sufficient to ensure that per-event contribution caps can be maintained. The threshold is recalculated based on the current member composition. If the community falls below the threshold at the time of a qualifying event, Yusr will make reasonable efforts to facilitate coverage but cannot guarantee full coverage in sub-threshold conditions.
10. Limitation of Liability
Yusr's liability is limited to the amount of community contributions collected for a qualifying event, up to $12,000 CAD. Yusr is not liable for delays caused by third parties, funeral home disputes, or circumstances beyond its control. Yusr does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
11. Governing Law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein. Any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Ontario.
12. Amendments
Yusr reserves the right to amend these terms at any time. Members will be notified of material changes by email. Continued participation after notice constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
